The Best Time to Mow Your New Lawn

A common question we get asked here at A1Lawn is when should I mow my new grass. It may seem like a silly question, but it is very important to get it right.

Cutting A Newly Seeded Lawn

 If you cut your grass too soon or too short too soon it could destroy all your hard work. This is what we advise.

• When the new grass has reached a length of around 2-3 inches, it’s time to give it its first cut. The main thing to note at this point is not to cut it too short.

• Only take the top inch or so off the tips of the grass and leave plenty of growth, as over cutting could seriously damage the new blades and lead to considerable die-back.

• Keep repeating steps 1 & 2 when the grass re-grows back to 2-3 inches until the new grass is fully established, you can then start working your way down in height slowly cut after cut.

• It is also worth noting that there may still be some seed that is waiting to germinate. Over the coming weeks, this will lead to the lawn becoming thicker and lusher, so it’s worth giving the area a bit of time before you consider going over any remaining bare patches.

• If you have any of our A1Lawn Pre-Seeder Fertiliser (6-9-6) left over, then it will not go to waste. Giving the area added nutrients several weeks after its first germination will help promote the root system and lead to a healthier lawn in the long term.

To start off we need to think about the first cut of the season in Spring, again it may sound like a silly question but if it’s not done properly you can harm the lawn which will create more work in the near future.

• You want to let your grass grow to an optimal height before mowing to aid future growth. If you mow too short to soon you may damage the grass to the point that it won’t grow back properly. A good height to apply your first cut is around 2 – 3 inches for all amenity grass types.

• This also tells you your grass is actively growing well and healthy, if the grass cannot reach this height there may be something stinting the growth such as lack of nutrients. Our Ultimate Spring/Summer Lawn Fertiliser is perfect to boost a lawn back to life in Spring.

Once the first cut has been accomplished it’s now time to think about your recommended mowing height which is different for certain grass types.

• The fescue species can tolerate much closer mowing and create that ornamental look fescues are famous for. You can achieve this with our AM Pro-7 Premium Fine Lawn that produces a very fine bladed formal lawn (ornamental) or if your after that perfect bowling green look then our A1 Lawn Ornamental Grass Seed is the one to go for. The recommended height for these mixes is around 10-20mm.

• Moving on to a grass type such as our A1 Lawn Multi Purpose Grass Seed Lawn or A1 Lawn Ultra Hard-Wearing Lawn seed which creates a more practical and hard-wearing lawn is recommended to be around 20-40mm. Even though you could go lower at the end of the day these mixes are not designed to be an ornamental lawn and will perform much better at a higher height.
