November marks the end of the growing season here in the UK. From this point onwards, frosts are very likely to set in, and temperatures are often below 8 degrees Celsius, which is low enough to stop germination. Although nothing new will be growing in your garden, there are still tasks that need to be completed to keep your space in a healthy condition over the autumn/winter months.
General Tasks For November
- Remove any leaves from the garden as and when they appear
- Clean hard surfaces such as patios and paving to remove green algae slimes and help keep them safe to walk on
Lawn / Turfed Area Maintenance
- If the weather is not frosty or too wet, the lawn can have its final cut of the year using the mower on its highest setting
- Keep off the lawn as much as possible if frosts are present
- Repair any bald spots in your lawn with a cool start grass seed
- Where snowfall has occurred, make sure that you shovel it off of the lawn to avoid any lasting damage
- Keep your lawn healthy with Autumn/Winter Fertiliser
Trees, Shrubs and Hedges
- Keep an eye out to make sure that none of these have any wind damage and ensure that stakes and ties are still all in place
- Remove snowfall off of conifers
- Protect sensitive shrubs and trees from frosts
- Chop up any faded plants, annuals and crops, and add them to the compost bin
Beds and Borders
- Give these areas a tidy-up, cutting back any old growth
Winter Wildlife Help
- Are you having a bonfire this bonfire night, or simply getting rid of the leaf buildup? Make sure to check your bonfire pile for hedgehogs or other wildlife before lighting it.
- Clean out and scrub bird feeders regularly (and fill them! Enjoy the birds getting their little treats in your winter garden)
- If you have the space consider making shelters for your garden wildlife to keep them cosy this winter
