As we have reached February there is a glimmer of hope that spring is just around the corner and the weather will finally start to become a little warmer. February itself is still a cold month like January, so it is important that you only undertake tasks when the weather conditions are not extreme and there are no frosts present. See what we recommend should be done this month:
General Tasks for February
- Make sure that paths and pavements remain clean and algae-free so that they are safe to walk on and not a slip hazard
- Refill your bird feeders - it's still cold and the birds will appreciate the extra help. Stock up on high quality bird food via our sister brand Lakes Collection
- Clean out any unused garden pots ready for potting in the spring
Lawns/Turfed Areas
- Get your soil analysed, knowing what your soil contents are will help you get the best products for your lawn & garden
- Whilst the ground is wet, try to keep off of the area to avoid soil compaction
- If you are starting to see moss in your lawns, you can start to tackle this as long as conditions are not frosty
Trees, Shrubs and Hedges
- Check all trees, hedges and shrubs for wind damage (root rock)
- Use Arbor Gold to help with the regrowth of any wind-damaged plants
- Hardy evergreens can be pruned this month
- Cut back any vine plants such as Virginia creeper to prevent them from blocking windows, gutters or getting within roof tiles.
What can I plant in February?
- In the greenhouse: Peppers, chillis, tomatoes, kale and basil
- Flowers for the plant pots: Geraniums and anemones
- For your vegetable garden: Carrots, broad beans, potatoes, lettuce and cabbage
- Bedding flowers: Sweet peas, lilies, bare root roses, pansies, primroses, and cosmos
Is February too early to weed the garden?
No, you can weed any time of year as long as you are conscious to avoid the snow, ice and frost. We highly recommend reading the instructions of any weed control you are using on your garden as they may have temperature ranges that they work best in.
Whilst it is a quiet month due to no plant growth there are still plenty of tasks to do in preparation for the beginning of spring. Want to get ahead and start preparing for March? Read our March gardening jobs blog.
