March is here and is a month filled with new life and (keeping our fingers crossed) warmer weather! With things starting to ever so slightly warm up, there are a few tasks that need completing to make sure that your garden is in top condition.

General Tasks For March

  • Service your garden tools ready for the busier months ahead.
  • Start keeping an eye out for weeds that will be appearing and apply weed control products that are suitable for use at this time of the year
  • March is the best time to start prep work in your garden before sowing anything or even going ahead with your first cut of the year - keep an eye out for moss and other debris that may be present
  • Resurface your paths before the plants regrow to prevent it being smothered

Lawns / Turfed Area Maintenance 

  • If the weather is looking agreeable, you can start laying some new turf! See below for our best sellers at this time of year, or shop our whole range of grass seed.
  • On dry days you can start to mow the lawn
  • Look at applying a suitable fertiliser for the time of year
  • Continue with moss treatments if moss is present

Trees, Shrubs and Hedges 

  • Planting of bare-root trees and shrubs (including fruit trees, fruit bushes and hedging materials) can be done this month
  • Move any of your deciduous trees and shrubs if the soil isn't frozen or waterlogged

Look after the wildlife

  • Continue feeding the birds, mix up their food and see what kind of birds will come for a visit
  • keep a clean source of drinking water for the birds, this is important in the colder months as their primary source may be frozen
  • The bees are waking up, and they'll be looking for new places to nest, keep your garden bee-friendly by growing sowing or planting pollinator-friendly flowers
